Dear High Plain Parents:

Climate change is happening all around us and its pace is accelerating. From melting glaciers to increasingly intense weather patterns, climate change is already impacting life on Earth. Urgent action is needed now to protect our planet’s future.

On March 27, 2010, at 8:30 pm local time, our committee members, along with millions of families around the world, will turn out the lights for one hour—Earth Hour—to make a collective statement of concern about climate change and the state of our planet’s health.

Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour is the largest event of its kind in the world. In 2009, nearly one billion people from 4,100 cities in 87 countries turned out the lights, as well as international landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower and Great Pyramids and the city skylines of Las Vegas, Hong Kong and Tel Aviv.

Earth Watch is urging the entire High Plain Community to participate. We have even sent a letter to the Andover Board of Selectmen urging the Town of Andover to get involved.  We encourage you to support your child by agreeing to participate and to utilize this event as a platform to engage your family on the issue of climate change and environmental issues.

Participation is free and easy. By turning out all non-essential lighting for one hour your family will join cities, states, schools and individuals throughout the world in calling for action to save our planet.

Turning off the lights for Earth Hour would enable our students to not only express their concern about our planet, but would provide a unique lesson in citizenship. Earth Hour also provides an excellent forum for parents and teachers to hold meaningful discussions on topics related to this issue—from the impact that climate change is already having on people and animal species, to the many ways students can act to be part of the solution.

For more information, please visit www.EarthHourKids.org.

We hope your family will participate.

Sincerely,
The students of High Plain Earth Watch
