Special Message:
With summer fast approaching, many of our Andover children are looking forward to attending one of the fantastic day camps that our area has to offer. As parents, many of us also fondly remember our experiences at a summer camp when we were young and the many friendships that we made. Unfortunately, one of our Merrimack Valley camps – The YWCA’s Camp Y Wood on Captain’s Pond in Salem, NH, was the victim of arson during the early morning hours of Friday, May 28th. The main camp building, one of only two structures at the camp, was completely destroyed. The building housed all staff desks, camper's records, office supplies, computers, phones, a kitchen, all safety equipment and medical first aid supplies for all campers and staff. It also stored 6 new mountain bikes donated to the YWCA for camp purposes.
The YWCA is making an appeal to the community for donations – monetary, voluntary service time and for specific items which are listed below. If anyone is interested in making a donation of service time or of one of the specific items on the list below, please send an email by June 18th to either:
Ame Matuza (YWCA of Greater Lawrence Board member and mother of Zoe Nepomnayshy – grade 3 at West Elementary and Zack Nepomnayshy – grade 1 at Shawsheen Elementary) d.nepomnayshy@comcast.net OR
Eileen Forgue (YWCA of Greater Lawrence Volunteer and mother of Naomi Forgue – grade 4 at West Elementary and Jobe Forgue – grade 2 at Shawsheen Elementary)eforgue@verizon.net
In your email, please indicate which item(s) you would like to donate and one of us will reply within 24 hours to you regarding whether or not the item(s) are still needed, and with further instructions regarding where to bring the item for central pick-up. We'll take care of delivery to the YWCA and we will be working directly with the YWCA to coordinate the collection of items to prevent overlap of donations from various sources. More information on Camp Y-Wood is listed below. Many thanks to everyone for your support!

Hi Andover Trailheads!
The Andover Trails Committee and the Andover Historical Society are teaming up this season to create a unique 3-part hike series called “Stories from the Trails.” Each hike in this series will feature both the natural beauty and unique geology of the featured property, as well as colorful stories of Andover's history specifically related to each property and the nearby areas.
The series, which is free and open to the public, will commence on Sunday, June 27 at 1p at the AVIS Skug River Reservation in Andover. This first hike is approximately 2 miles of relatively level walking and will take about 2 hours. On this first hike, Jane Cairns from the Andover Historical Society will join us to bring the history of the area to life!
The Skug River Reservation is located on Salem Street in Andover, near the intersection of Wagon Wheel Road. Parking for about 10 cars is available in the reservation lot, with ample additional parking available right around the corner on Wagon Wheel Road.
Here's a sneak preview of what'll you'll see and hear about on the June 27 Skug River Reservation hike:
Most of the land that now makes up the Skug River Reservation belonged to several generations of the Jenkins family, who dammed the river to power a profitable sawmill and gristmill. The dam has long since washed away, but the massive stone walls of the millrace can still be seen from the trail. In the middle of the 19th century, William Jenkins quarried and polished stone on the site, and used the mill to cut the locally abundant blue soapstone (a soft, greasy-feeling rock) into tombstones, building faces and other small items.
Among the quarried and wedged outcrops of stone lies a “glacial erratic” -- an enormous boulder deposited during the last ice age.
William Jenkins was also one of Andover’s most ardent Abolitionists. On our hike, we'll see the original Jenkins house, which was a station on the Underground Railroad, and a gathering place for William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe and the famous Hutchinson Family Singers.
Jane and I both hope to see you on the 27th!
