| Dear Andover Trail-heads,
With most of the good cross-country skiing snow now washed away (temporarily!) and a bitter wind howling outside, it seems like as good a time as any to send a quick update! Winter is a great time to enjoy the trails of Andover - whether you're exploring your favorite AVIS reservation, Andover Conservation property, Harold Parker State Forest or The Ward Reservation - remember that you can find trail maps and descriptions of all of these properties on our website at www.andovertrails.org!
Jan 17 Ski / Hike recap: Thanks to everyone who attended our January 17th hike / ski that traversed various parts of the Skug River AVIS reservation and Harold Parker State Forest. After splitting the group into hikers and skiers, we set off for an afternoon of adventure. Many thanks to Jeff and Nancy LaFountain for leading the hiking party, and to Annette Grams for enthusiastically showing the group the benefits and fun of walking with nordic poles. UPCOMING EVENTS:
Saturday Feb 6 at 2p: Guided hike / snowshoe trek with campfire & hot chocolate! Join the Andover Conservation Commission and Andover Trails Committee as we explore the Bald Hill / Wood Hill Reservations by snowshoe. Meet at Holmes Rd parking area (Directions: Lowell St. (Route 133) toward Tewksbury then a right on Haggets Pond Rd. Pass under Rte 495 then take the first right onto Holmes Rd. Go all the way to the end and park.) This is a 2.25 mile trek that will start at 2pm sharp. The hike should take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, including hot chocolate and snack around a camp fire provided by Andover Conservation Commission. All welcome! For questions or to express interest, please contact Bob Decelle at rhdecelle@hotmail.com
Sunday Feb 14 - Noon to 3p: Winter Fun Day at the Ward Reservation! Winter is a delightful season to experience the trails at the Ward Reservation, at the end of Prospect Road off of Route 125. Cross Country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, refreshments and warming fire will be available throughout the day. The event will take place with or without snow on the ground and is FREE! For information on this event and equipment rental, please call 978-682-3580 ext. 1#. Hosted by Ward Property Committee, Andover Trails Committee, Friends of North Andover Trails, and Moor & Mountain. Equipment rentals available at Moor & Mountain in Andover. To download a copy of the event flyer, simply click here.
Saturday Feb 27 from Noon on: Winter Camping along the Shawsheen River!! A good way to begin the camping year. Cool, clean, crisp late winter air and, according to our crack Lunamatologist, Andy M. there should be a full moon that night. It would be nice to have some more snow on site for the event so a snow dance is being contemplated. Plenty of split seasoned red oak for the fire. For questions or to express interest, please contact Bob Decelle at rhdecelle@hotmail.com
As you can see - lots to do in February - I hope you'll take advantage!
See you on the trails!

Looking for something fun and different to do this fall? Try the new Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. It is a great off-road bike trail that is easy to get to from Andover. Take 495 South to Route 3 North. Get off the first exit in Lowell and take a right into the parking lot of the Motorola building. The rail trail parking lot is around to the right. Click on their website for more information.
